Looking at the education reform plans of the Obama administration and Education Secretary Arne Duncan, I see more of the same kinds of reforms that have failed for well over a century. (Think about how many different reforms you've observed through your years. How many of them really changed the schools?)Over the years, most reforms have been directed at such aspects as teaching, curriculum, accountability, or changing the age grouping of children. In all of these failed reforms there's been a constant aspect that's been overlooked: the management structure of our schools. Schools have always been managed by the military/industrial chain of command, hierarchy style even though extensive research and compelling evidence shows that this style is antithetical to a learning environment. So more of the same is like the old adage says about of putting new wine in to very old and leaky bottles.
The better way to manage our schools so that they work for everyone (ALL stakeholders) is the model of collaborative democratic management. Indeed, the research and the evidence is very compelling that this model of management is idea for creating a meaningful learning environment.
